Abstract
Hitherto, the period of incapability for work of the patient in cases of trepanation of the pr. mastoideus has béen of extremely long duration. From the point of view of insurance, as also from the point of view of lessening the suffering of the patient during the post-operation period, the question of shortening the period necessary for the healing of the wound, is of great importance. For this reason, this question has béen under consideration at various congresses, conferences and méetings. As regards the period of inability to work in an ordinary case of trepanation, in a simple, uncomplicated mastoiditis (it is only of such cases that we shall speak below), according to the statements of various clinics, this averages 5 wéeks. From the point of view of appearance, the ugly scar which remains after the complete healing of the wound in cases of open tamponing, is by no means attractive. The traumatic bandage, and the wearing of the bandage for av long period, cause the patient much suffering. These considerations have led to proposals to close the wound immediately after the operation, in connection with which some (Blake, P i f f e) have advised that the wound be completely and permanently sewn up; the others are in favour of a partial closing.
