Fibrous Dysplasia and Asymmetry of Facial Bones Caused by Traumatic Dental Occlusion: Discussion: G. Mårtensson, H. Myrhaug

Pages 206-220 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

Asymmetry of facial bones is frequently seen in civilized races but do rarely occur in wild tribes. This observation is made repeatedly by dental investigators. They found that the development of facial bones is closely connected to the tooth bearing structures to which most facial deformities can be traced. The harmonious form and symmetry of the face is distorted by the deteriorating influence of dental caries which is primary a disease connected to civilization. Price (6) and others call attention to this, and he made the following observations among Eskimos in North America: “Among those living on efficient nature foods not a single case of irregularities of the dental arch and facial form was found.”
