Experience with a New Implant Material in Operations for Ozaena

Pages 232-235 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

In animal experiments performed at the Otolaryngological Department of the University Hospital in Turku it was confirmed that dolomite - a rock consisting of magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate and resembling to some extent bone tissue in composition and structure - causes no irritation in the tissues. After experiments with guinea pigs a series of ozaena patients were operated upon using this material for implants under the mucoperosteum in the nasal septum and at the bottom of the meatuses. Since October 1956 we have operated on altogether 13 patients without having any complications (Figs. 1-4)
