Pages 241-251 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

The object of the fenestration operation is to procure new pathways to the labyrinth for the sound waves, the native way through the oval window being inhibited in the otosclerotic ear. The removal of the ossicular chain and other postoperative structural changes in the middle ear involve a mechanical loss, however, which restricts the hearing improvement to about 25-30 db. above the preoperative bone conduction threshold (4).
