Gellé Test with Békésy Audiometry: II. Normal Values

Abstract

A standardized method of performing the Gellé test with Békésy audiometry was used for the determination of normal test values. It could be shown that normal reactions can be duplicated with remarkable accuracy and stability.

Similar to Békésy audiometry in general, the audiometric Gellé test is subject to certain individual variations. The dependence of these variations on certain psycho-acoustic abilities has been discussed. Among these, musicality is one of the favorable abilities which facilitate the performance of the Gellé test.

As with vestibular testing, there are no sharply definable normal values of the Gelle test. Rather, individual variations scatter around some predominant average values of TTS in response to altered meatal air pressure. An average normal response is sufficiently different from the great multitude of pathologic findings to permit the clear distinction between normal and abnormal test results.
