Abstract

A proper tone stimulus causes changes in respiration, galvanic skin reaction (GSR) and heart rate.

In this study frequency modulated (FM) tone and horn sound stimulations were given to 53 healthy infants. Their respiration, GSR and heart rate changes were recorded. Sure positive responses were obtained at 80 dB (SPL) FM tones in respiration with over 80 % of the stimuli, in GSR with about 80 % and in heart rate with only under 60 % of the stimuli. The corresponding percentages with horn sounds were about the same. From the results can be concluded that audiovegetative responses teach us about a newborn infant's general condition, reactions to sounds and as was expected, enable us to obtain information about his hearing ability.
