Adenoidectomy and Secretory Otitis Media

Abstract

A striking coincidence between nasal symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy and chronic secretory otitis media (SOM) was found in 343 patients with their first otosurgical treatment for SOM in the period 1976–78. Tubulation was combined with adenoidectomy in patients with obstructive nasal symptoms. In connection with the first recurrence of SOM, the middle ear effusion was considered to strengthen the indication for adenoidectomy. In both situations adenoidectomy was associated with a significantly improved prognosis of SOM.
