Mastoid Pneumatization

Pages 73-80 | Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

The hereditary theory of pneumatization is based on the fact that the size of mastoid air cells in normal adults almost follows a Gaussian distribution. In this work it was shown that middle ear mucosa in children, when the pneumatization process takes place, is exposed to pathological stimuli of varying degrees of severity and duration. This may have a considerable effect on the process of pneumatization, the end result of which may be a large variation in the size of the cellular system.
