Abstract
From an anatomical point of view the tympanic membrane (TM) is a unique structure in that it is distended in air. The TM is the only part of the middle ear that can be inspected directly through the external auditory canal. Most, if not all, pathological conditions of the middle ear will cause changes in the appearance of the TM. The TM will thus play a central role in middle ear diagnostics and a thorough knowledge of its normal histologic architecture and appearance is of the utmost importance in order to evaluate pathological conditions of the middle ear cavity.
