Synopsis
Certain parameters of the depressive states are discussed, genetic, biochemical, physiological and psychological, and the literature is reviewed. It is considered that future drug evaluation studies require a multidisciplinary approach and the measurement of these parameters if we are to progress beyond the present confusion on the indications for the treatment of depression. Such an approach would also be expected to extend our knowledge of the pathophysiology of the depressive states. This review also emphasises those areas of special interest in depression.
