Abstract

Salmonella strains with unusual biochemical and serological features were recently isolated in Auckland from two patients with severe enteric fever. The strains had serological properties resembling those of Salmonella sendai but the biochemical features of S. paratyphi A. They are considered variants of S. sendai but may be a new serotype. S. sendai was originally isolated from cases of enteric fever in the Orient, but elsewhere is uncommon. To our knowledge, on only two previous occasions has S. sendai been identified in Australasia.
