Effects of Acute Respiratory Acidosis on Blood Lactate Concentration

Abstract

The effect of acute hypercapnia upon blood lactate concentration has been studied in anesthetized, curarized dogs. In all experiments a significant and consistent fall in blood lactate to less than half the control value was demonstrated. These observations complement those demonstrating the well-known rise in blood lactate in alkalotic states and suggest that the effect of alteration of blood pH upon glycolysis extends to the acid range of pH values.
