The Effect of Blood in the CSF on the CSF Lactate, Pyruvate and Bicarbonate Concentrations

Pages 361-366 | Received 20 Dec 1968, Accepted 02 Apr 1969, Published online: 08 Jul 2009

Abstract

The effect of blood admixture to CSF on the CSF lactate and pyruvate concentrations was studied both in vitro during tonometry and in vivo in anaesthetized cats. Blood admixture gave rise to a progressive increase in the lactate and pyruvate concentrations, but there were no significant changes in the lactate/pyruvate ratios.
