Abstract

The influence of a combination of estrogen and gestogen or of gestogens alone on tryptophan metabolism was studied in male subjects. Administration of both estrogen and gestogen caused increased urinary excretion of meta bolites of tryptophan and nicotinic acid after a loading dose of tryptophan, whereas gestogens alone caused decreased urinary excretion of nicotinic acid metabolites. Vitamin B₆ supplementation was able to normalize urinary excretion of tryptophan metabolites, but had no effect on urinary excretion of nicotinic acid metabolites. These results indicate that there is a control by female sex hormones of tryptophan metabolism in man.
