Simone L. Gorter; SIMONE L. GORTER is a rheumatologist, with a special interest in medical education. She performed her thesis on Rheumatologists’ daily practice performance, using incognito standardized patients, and focus group techniques.

Willem S. De Grave; WILLEM S. de GRAVE is an educational psychologist, has ample experience using focus group techniques, for example to study aspects of professionalism, and is also interested in aspects of patient safety.

Scheltus J. van Luijk; SCHELTUS J. van LUIJK is a medical doctor, with a fulltime involvement in medical education. Amongst others, he chaired the National working group on Professional Behaviour, resulting in the publication of the Consilium Abeundi report, a guide for faculties regarding professionalism issues.

Valerie Wass; VALERIE WASS is a professor of community-based medical education, and performed a thesis in medical education. She contributed for example to the UK report on workplace-based assessment, and chairs the AMEE working group on Professionalism.

Jan Harm Zwaveling; currently member of the Board of Directors, Maxima Medical Centre, Veldhoven, The Netherlands; JAN HARM ZWAVELING is a professor of intensive care medicine, member of the board of directors of the Maxima Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and, as a promotor of WvM, contributes to the research in graduate medical education regarding professionalism issues.

Lambert W. Schuwirth; LAMBERT W. SCHUWIRTH is a professor of innovative assessment methods, co-chair of WvM in the CoBaTrICE project, and promotor of WvM. Many of his publications in the field of medical education have been co-authored by CvV.

Cees P. M. Van Der Vleuten; CEES P.M. van der VLEUTEN is professor of medical education, chair of the department of medical education development and research, and promoter of WvM. In recent years, many of his publications in the field of medical education have been co-authored by LS.

Abstract

Given the changes in society we are experiencing, the increasing focus on patient-centred care and acknowledgement that medical education including professionalism issues needs to continue not only in the residency programmes but also throughout the doctors career, is not surprising. Although most of the literature on professionalism pertains to learning and teaching professionalism issues, addressing unprofessional behaviour and related patient safety issues forms an alternative or perhaps complementary approach. This article describes the possibility of selecting applicants for a medical school based on personality characteristics, the attention to professional lapses in contemporary undergraduate training, as well as the magnitude, aetiology, surveillance and methods of dealing with reports of unprofessional behaviour in postgraduate education and CME.
