Summary

One hundred and forty-nine women using both masks and mouthpieces were studied to determine the incidence of minor side effects associated with the use of nitrous oxide and oxygen (Entonox) in labour. In addition the potential role of small rebreathing humidifiers was assessed. Two side effects were commonly noted: dry mouth (78 per cent) and lightheadedness (S3 per cent). The former was not influenced by method of administration or humidifier whereas the latter was less common with a mask alone.
