Sparganosis Mimicking an Orbital Myositis

Abstract

A case is reported of orbital sparganosis (infection by the larvae of tapeworms of Spirometra species). The presentation of the case simulated the clinical syndrome of orbital myositis. The fact that there was no orbital mass, the imaging finding of swollen extraocular muscles, and an initial response to treatment with corticosteroids led to a misdiagnosis of orbital myositis.
