Abstract
The authors present two patients with spontaneous granulation after surgical removal of basal cell carcinoma in the medial canthal area. In both cases the tumor was excised under histological control. The defect was minimized. The eyelids were attached to the remnants of the medial canthal tendon or nasal periosteum and the defect was covered with Spongostan(r) and antibiotic ointment. In the second case an additional cryotherapy of the tumor bed was performed. Spontaneous granulation occurred within four to five weeks. In one case good postoperative cosmetic and functional results were obtained, in the other case scar formation of conjunctiva, eversio puncti lacrimalis, strabismus divergens and diplopia occurred. Problems and advantages of the laissez-faire technique are discussed.
