Abstract

This article describes the effect of nifedipine, a calcium antagonist, on exercise-induced asthma (EIA). Effect of sublingual administration of 20 mg of nifedipine or placebo was studied in randomized double-blind manner on separate days in 19 extrinsic asthmatic subjects. Nifedipine was found to be significantly effective in abolishing the exercise-induced decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC) and maximal expiratory flows (p < 0.001). There were no significant changes in heart rate and blood pressure after nifedipine.
