Circulatory Changes in the Premaxilla During Treatment for Bilateral Complete Cleft Lip and Palate

Abstract

The 133Xe-clearance method was used to follow quantitative circulatory changes in the premaxilla of 5 patients with bilateral complete cleft lip and palate in various stages of constructive surgery. The circulation appeared to decrease as a result of the operations performed but was, generally speaking, restored once the surgery was over. However, the premaxillary circulation in these patients was better, on an average, in all stages of construction than in the control group of 4 patients with cleft palate. Hence, it seems highly improbably that there is a causal relationship between the growth and circulatory disturbances in the premaxilla of cases with bilateral cleft.
