Abstract

(Da arbeidet presenteres på svensk, vil følgende korte engelske abstakt tjene som orientering for dem som ikke behersker nordiske språk:)

The paper discusses the rational use of drugs in protracted alcohol withdrawal. In general, the correct drug in a correct dose on a correct occasion should be administered to the correct patient. Since the acute withdrawal syndrome has disappeared, there is a phase with a variety of symptoms such as sleep disturbances and depressed libido. The term protracted withdrawal might be applied to this syndrome. There is a need for optimal treatment programs by combining evaluation of supportive care and pharmacotherapy. Which advantages and which disadvantages do drugs have in the short term and in the long term perspective?

Is there a specific treatment that attacks dependence? It would be of importance to define the situation precisely. Also, drugs such as α-methyltyrosine, FLA-S7 and zimelidine which might cause an ignorance to ethanol are discussed, either by causing av aversion to ethanol or by extinguishing the euphoria. Alcohol-sensitizing compounds is another category of drugs, the effects of which are studied. A psychological conditioning may also contribute to a withdrawal reaction.

Definitions of clinical situations should be improved in combination with an evaluation of pharmacotherapeutic approaches and supportive care.
