Pages 247-252 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

Psychiatric emergency facilities represent an important part of the network of mental health services. Emergency psychiatric services were formally established in Iceland in December 1982. The present paper describes the main psychiatric, clinical, social and demographic characteristics of the emergency patient population throughout the year 1983. A brief review of the relevant literature is presented and compared to the present results. In most respects the Icelandic data are consistent with, and comparable to, findings of previous studies of psychiatric emergency services. □ Psychiatric emergency services - Iceland 1983 – cohort characteristics.
