Abstract
The frequency of suicide in Blekinge was studied during and after the sectorization of the psychiatric service and compared with the time before the reorganization. There was no change in the suicide frequency during and after the reorganization compared with before and compared with Sweden as a whole. Before and during reorganization there was a large variation in the suicide frequency from year to year. After the the sectorization the variation decreased. Moreover, the number of inpatients decreased, and there was a rapid increase in outpatient visits, but there was no correlation with the suicide frequency. There was a large variation in unemployment during the period of the study, but there was no correlation between the number of suicides and unemployment. There was a positive correlation between the number of suicides and sales of neuroleptics, sedatives, and hypnotics. In Blekinge there was no correlation between the number of suicides and the sales of antidepressants, but there was a negative correlation in Sweden as a whole between the number of suicides and the sales of antidepressants.
