Abstract
The paper reviews the concept of vascular dementia (VaD) historically, and discusses its current conceptualization. The diversity of the concept is illustrated by the various pathogenetic mechanisms implicated in its aetiology, and the range of its manifestations. Recent advances in neuroimaging have given impetus to its precise definition, and two groups have proposed detailed diagnostic criteria. We discuss the clinical features of VaD in the light of these developments, and present a brief outline for assessment and management of this disorder
