Abstract
Potential aetiological factors have been studied extensively in attempts to explain the high prevalence of depression in old age, identify those at risk and to suggest interventions. Most studies have focused on broadly social or broadly biological factors although there have been some attempts to generate integrated aetiological hypotheses. In this paper demographic, social and biological factors will be discussed separately, concluding with an attempt to integrate the effect of the different factors into a coherent synthesis
