Abstract
Summary
This paper provides description of available data on the manifestations and management of sexual dysfunctions in India. Historical aspects of sexual dysfunction in the context of ancient Indian systems of medicine are commented upon. It is noted that the investigations on the subject from India are deficient in methodology particularly the adequacy of assessment of the problems and the system of diagnosis used Almost all of the studies have concentrated on male subjects and the sexual problems of females have not received any meaningful research attention. Erectile dysfunctions, premature ejaculation and combination of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation are major problems. Dhat Syndrome, with or without sexual problems, emerges as perhaps a culture specific problem, the nosological status of which needs to be established. Evaluation of treatment of these patients largely remains uncontrolled. A great deal of systematic and methodologically sound work still needs to be done.
