Everyman's* Guide to the Fluctuating Lithium Level: Obvious and Obscure Reasons Why Serum Lithium Levels Change

Abstract

The Lithium Information Center periodically receives requests asking why a patient's serum lithium level increases or decreases (often substantially) in the absence of an obvious explanation. We have reviewed the literature [l] and our experience for possible explanations for the fluctuating lithium level (FLL) that should allow clinicians to address the problem in a systematic fashion.
