The Uniqueness of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) — Why Cannot Most Copper Compounds Substitute Sod In vivo?

Abstract

It is shown that the copper zinc superoxide dismutase is unique in its ability to catalyze O2- dismutation in vivo in contrast to other copper compounds which have this feature only in vitro. The reasons for this difference are discussed in terms of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters.
