Abstract
Addiction to propoxyphene hydrochloride has been reported in the literature previously, although usually in patients afflicted with a variety of psychiatric ills or those already prone to drug and alcohol abuse. The author first reviews previous case reports of propoxyphene addiction, and then discusses basic experimental data which indicate that the potential of propoxyphene addiction is greater than previously suspected. Seven additional cases of propoxyphene addiction are described in patients with no prior history of psychiatric difficulties or other drug abuse. The physician's role in unknowingly abetting propoxyphene abuse is stressed and suggestions for further definitive research offered.
