Pages 1207-1221 | Published online: 03 Jul 2009

Abstract

Man's relationship with alcohol, our major intoxicant through the ages, is surveyed from the recorded evidence of Ancient Egypt. The availability of alcoholic beverages, the acculturation of the drinking habit, along with the treatment and control measures recommended for its abuse are reviewed. The shortcomings of the present data dealing with a 5000 years historical span are identified. Similarities and differences with our modern perspective are delineated.
