Abstract
The transtheoretical model of change describes a continuum of behavior change as a transition through the following stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The transtheoretical model's applicability to an alcohol-dependent population has been briefly examined among individuals entering an alcohol dependency treatment program and people attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. However, there continues to be a limited number of studies applying this model to alcohol treatment. The purpose of the study was to discover if the stages of the transtheoretical model of change are compatible with the phases of a Navy/Marine Corps rehabilitation program for the treatment of alcohol dependence. The results found a distinct association between the transtheoretical model of change and phases of alcohol dependency treatment at one rehabilitation center. The transtheoretical model's practical applications to nursing are discussed.
