Abstract

In the United States, the National Pregnancy and Health Survey estimates that during pregnancy, 5.5% of women used an illicit drug1 and 18.8% of women used alcohol—but other estimates of alcohol use during pregnancy range from 5% to 11%.2 The typical pattern of drug abuse involves using more than one type of substance.
