A Cognitive Therapy Conceptualization of Codependency Among Women

Pages 109-114 | Published online: 12 Jul 2009

Abstract

Clinical observation has demonstrated that codependency is the maladaptive behavior of taking unrealistic responsibility for other people, consequently sabotaging their own well-being. Nurses and other healthcare providers can help point out these maladaptive patterns. Utilizing the aforementioned interventions, the nurse can help patients modify faulty beliefs and change dysfunctional behavioral patterns. Healthcare providers also can serve as role models for their patients. Acknowledging, accepting, and normalizing these emotional difficulties allows the nurse to therapeutically utilize the nurse-patient relationship.
