Pages 169-175 | Published online: 06 Jul 2009

Abstract

This article offers a discussion of the problematic and related concepts of empowerment and advocacy and how they have been operationalised in one particular example in Newcastle upon Tyne: an account of the processes of consultation and negotiation leading in 1993 to the setting up of Advocacy Network Newcastle (ANN) which then, on the basis of an agreed Code of Practice and an Advocacy Strategy, led in 1996 to the founding of an Advocacy Centre.
