Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Functional Folate Deficiency in the Presence of Elevated Serum and Erythrocyte Folate: A Preliminary Report

&
Pages 441-447 | Published online: 13 Jul 2009

Abstract

In this report, we describe a small group of patients (n = 8) presenting with chronic depression and compulsions, consistently elevated erythrocyte folate with fluctuating serum folate concentrations, and normal serum vitamin B12 concentrations. A possible derangement of folate metabolism may elevate body stores of the vitamin but produce a functional and symptomatic deficiency characterized by haematologic and psychiatric abnormalities.
