Abstract

Quality of life (QOL) was assessed in gallstone disease using a newly developed index (GIQL) which was applied before and after laparoscopic (n = 158) or conventional (n = 21) cholecystectomy and compared to 70 healthy persons. A significant correlation (Pearson's R > 0.8) to available indices was found. On the scale from 0 (worst QOL) to 128 (no impairment of QOL), patients before laparoscopic cholecystectomy had a score of 85.3 (±17). Post-operatively, it rose to 102.7 (±17) (P < 0.003) at 2 weeks and to 111.4 (±14) (P = 0.003) at 6 weeks (normals: 107.6 points; ±17 NS). Patients after conventional cholecystectomy had a significant increase from 89.9 (±17) post-surgery to 102.8 (±24) points but not before 6 weeks after surgery. These results were confirmed with respect to typical symptoms of gallstone disease. We conclude that a simple index can demonstrate that laparoscopic cholecystectomy results in immediate post-operative improval in quality of life.
