Summary

Since the introduction of endoscopic surgery, the training of manual skills for the new procedures has become of major interest. In the Training Center of the Section for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) of the Department of General Surgery at the Eberhard-Karls-University in Tuebingen, we prefer plastic trainers with integrated animal organs as educational tools. This concept seems to be a good compromise and combines advantages of animal experiments and the simple use of plastic dummies. As most surgeons are familiar with the basic laparoscopic procedures by now, a new development towards the establishment of technology-orientated courses is under way. For the future, we expect computer simulation with three-dimensional anatomical models to play an important role in the training of surgeons in laparoscopic and conventional procedures.
