Abstract
An ethno-botanical exploration under the sponsorship of the Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, Government of India, has been carried out 1971 to 1978 in the southernmost part of India, Kerala State. This small state with its near equatorial position and distinct geographical zonations into hill, plain and coastal regions is found to be an area rich in medicinal plants. The evergreen forests of the hill regions are inhabited by as many as 36 forest tribes. While studying the mode of living, culture etc., and utilizing their guidance in field work, a number of drugs that are in common use among them have come to light. A selected list of 100 drugs commonly used by the experienced elders of the “Kani” tribe of the Trivandrum Forest Division is presented here with details of administration. An attempt has also been made to evaluate the claims of the tribe in terms of the known chemical constitution of the plants.
