Abstract
The effect of the ethanolie extract of Salvia haematodes Wall, root was studied on the central nervous system. Spontaneous motor activity was decreased significantly in mice. Pentobarbitone-induced narcosis was markedly potentiated and amphetamine-induced excitation in rats was antagonized. The extract showed significant analgesic activity as evident from an increase in reaction time to heat stimulus. The extract exhibited protection against supramaximal electroshock seizures in mice. There was a significant increase in hypoxic survival time of mice. The rectal temperature of rats registered a significant fall. The oral LD50 was found to be 2.3 g/kg body weight.
