Abstract
A pharmacognostic study of Coriaria myrtifolia, a toxic mediterranean plant used as an adulterant of senna and in traditional medicine, was carried out to develop a rapid evaluation method for commercial senna powder. Microscopical constants and microcharacters of leaves allow the identification of C. myrtifolia even when a small amount is mixed with senna powder. A simple comparative procedure is proposed to distinguish C. myrtifolia fragments used as an adulterant of Alexandria and Tinnevelly senna powder.
