Abstract
Analytical studies on crude root drugs (roots of medicinal value) collected from a number of storehouses in India showed the molds Aspergillus flavus group, A. niger, A. ochraceus, Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium spp., Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium spp. as dominant fungal flora. Forty-four root samples of five plants were subjected to various physico-chemical tests, and 22 were found positive for mycotoxins. Aflatoxin B1 was present in all the contaminated samples, whereas zearalenone, ochratoxin A and citrinin were of low incidence. Forty-four strains of A. flavus were isolated from different root samples, and 21 were found to produce Aflatoxin-B1 in the range of 0.08 to 0.75 μg/ml of culture filtrate.
