Abstract

Preliminary studies of some medicinal plants used by the Ibos of Nigeria as a purgative remedy were carried out. Eight of the most commonly used plants were identified. The aqueous extracts of the plants were prepared AND studied for pharmacological effects related to purgation. Phytochemical AND toxicological investigations were also conducted. The results appear to correlate with the local use of the plants.
