Abstract
Salvia plebeia R. Br., Ocimum gratissimum L, and Ocimum basilicum L.(Labiatae) are used in a Taiwan herbal remedy named “Chhit-Chan-Than”, believed to possess anti-inflammatory and detoxication activities. It has also been used in the treatment of hepatitis. To elucidate the hepatoprotective effects of “Chhit-Chan-Than”, experiments on CCl4- and D-GalN-induced acute hepatitis in rats were conducted with crude extracts of the three plants. These were compared to Bupleurum chinense D.C. (Um-belliferae). The results indicated that S. plebeia protects the liver against CCl4- intoxication and D-GalN-induced hepatotoxicity and was the most potent of the three crude extracts.
