Symposium Proceedings: Replacing the Draize Eye Irritation Test: Scientific Background and Research Needs Technical Committee on Alternatives to Animal Testing

Abstract

Products in commerce, whether drugs, cosmetics, home and automobile care products, or bulk chemicals, are subject to a variety of tests to determine whether the ingredients and products have any potential adverse health effects. The results of such tests, usually performed in animals, are incorporated into risk assessments and risk characterizations that estimate acceptable exposures, evaluate risk/benefit relationships, and identify mitigating measures to reduce human exposure to known or predicted health hazards.
