Abstract
Two cases of neonatal hepatitis B have been followed over a 3-year period. In one of the cases there was probably an intrauterine infection. The infants have had a mild form of anicteric protracted hepatitis with slightly raised SGPT and persistent antigenemia. Liver biopsies at 2.5 and 2 years of age showed in one case chronic persistent hepatitis, while the biopsy in the other case was probably performed at the time of healing. The long-term effect of this type of neonatal hepatitis is unknown. As judged from these two cases the prognosis seems good. There has been no impairment of the physical development and the infection has not produced any symptoms.
