Abstract

A 23-year-old woman was delivered of twins 10 hours after rupture of the membranes. The infants appeared to be normal at birth. Very soon both developed a respiratory distress syndrome. Culture of CSF from both infants gave growth of beta-haemolytic streptococci group B. Both children died within a few days. Culture of vaginal smears from the mother 3 weeks after delivery also revealed growth of group B streptococci. As far as we know, this is the first time on record that both newborn twins developed fatal streptococcus group B meningitis.
