The Contributions from Hyaluronic Acid and from Protein to the Colloid Osmotic Pressure of Human Synovial Fluid

&
Pages 18-28 | Published online: 10 Nov 2014

Summary

The colloid osmotic pressure of two normal or nearly normal human synovial fluids was found to be 140 and 121 mm. H2O, respectively. After incubation with hyaluronidase the osmotic pressure of the latter fluid decreased to 101 mm. H2O, and after further digestion with trypsin the osmotic pressure was measured at 3.6 mm. H2O.

The concentration of mucin was found to be about 1.6%, the molecular weight of mucin to be about 220×103.

The relative viscosity of the two fluids was measured at 32.8 and 306.9, respectively. Upon incubation with hyaluronidase an abrupt decrease in viscosity was observed.

The osmotic pressure of a synovial fluid from a patient suffering from degenerative arthritis was measured at 113 mm H2O. After intraarticular injection of hydrocortisone acetate the osmotic pressure had risen to 120 mm. H2O. It is suggested that the effect of cortisone is exerted upon the hyaluronic acid of the synovial fluid.
