Corticosteroids and Carcinogenesis: A Clinical Survey

Summary

Animal experiments indicate that cortisone accelerates the growth and dissemination of most tumours.

In a number of reported cases the rapid spread of metastases has followed soon after treatment with cortisone. In a patient with carcinoma of the pancreas, cortisone undoubtedly had a deleterious effect.

Enquiries should be made to discover if the death rate from cancer in patients taking cortisone is greater than in patients not under such treatment.

Des expériences sur l'animal ont indiqué que la cortisone accélère la croissance et la dissémination de certaines tumeurs.

Dans un nombre de cas rapporté la propagation rapide de métastases a suivi de près le traitement à la cortisone. Chez un malade atteint de carcinome du pancréas la cortisone a eu incontestablement un effet délétère.

Le nombre de malades décédés par suite de cancer et ayant pris de la cortisone ne semble pas être sensiblement supérieur à celui previsible dans un groupe de même importance n'ayant pas pris de cortisone.

Tierversuche haben gezeigt, dass Kortison das Wachstum und die Ausbreitung von einigen Tumoren beschleunigt.

Es ist über eine Anzahl von Fällen berichtet worden, bei denen bald nach der Behandlung mit Kortison eine äusserst rasche Ausbreitung von Metastasen eingesetzt hat. Bei einem Patienten mit Karzinom der Bauchspeicheldrüse hatte Kortison zweifellos schädliche Wirkung.

Die Anzahl der Todesfälle an Cancer bei Patienten, die mit Kortison behandelt wurden, scheint nicht signifikant grösser zu sein als diejenige, die bei der gleichen Anzahl von nicht mit Kortison behandelten Patienten zu erwarten steht.
