Changes of the Digital Arteries in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Study with the Aid of Post Mortem Brachial Arteriography

Summary

Ten cases of rheumatoid arthritis and twenty control cases were investigated with the aid of post-mortem brachial arteriography. Fine-grain X-ray film was used so as to render it possible to magnify the images by eight diameters. The alterations characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis were: local obliterations and post-stenotic dilatations of the digital arteries, as well as hypervascularization and dilatations of the arterial lumens in the vicinity of usurations of bone.

Résumé

Dix cas de polyarthrite chronique évolutive ont été étudiés par l'auteur à l'aide d'artériographies brachiales post mortem. Il employa à cet effet des films à rayons X finement granulés de manière à rendre possible l'agrandissement des images à huit fois leur diamètre. Les altérations caractéristiques de la polyarthrite chronique évolutive ont été les suivantes: oblitérations locales et dilatations post-sténotiques des artères digitales, ainsi que l'hypervascularisation et la dilatation des calibres artériels à proximité des usures d'os.

Zusammenfassung

Zehn Fälle von chronischem Gelenkrheumatismus sowie zwanzig Kontrollfälle wurden mit Hilfe von postmortaler Arm-Arteriographie untersucht. Es wurden feinkörnige Röntgenfilme verwendet, um es möglich zu machen, die Bilder auf das Achtfache ihres Durchmessers zu vergrössern. Die für chronischen Gelenkrheumatismus charakteristischen Veränderungen waren: örtliche Obliterationen und post-stenotische Erweiterungen der Fingerarterien ebenso übermässige Gefässbildung und Erweiterungen der inneren Durchmesser der Arterien in der Nähe von angegriffenen Knochen.
