Dr Hojat has led the development of the following four instruments that measure aspects of professionalism: Jefferson Scale of Empathy, Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning, Jefferson Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician–Nurse Collaboration, and Scale of Attitudes Toward Physician-Pharmacist Collaboration. Dr Hojat has served as a guest co-editor for thematic issues of the Journal of Social Behavior and Personality (on loneliness, 1987); Academic Medicine (on assessments in medical school and beyond, 1993) and Evaluation & the Health Professions (on changes in the health care system, 1999). His book: Empathy in Patient Care: Antecedents, Development and Outcomes was published by Springer Science in 2007.Correspondence[email protected]

James B. ErdmannJefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, USA; JAMES B. ERDMANN, Ph.D. is Associate Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Thomas Jefferson University and also the Director of the Jefferson Japan Center for Health Professions Education and Research. Dr Erdmann also served as the Dean of Jefferson's College of Health Professions, encompassing the Schools of Health Professions, Nursing and Pharmacy. Prior to joining Jefferson, he was the Director of the Division of Educational Measurement and Research for the Association of American Medical Colleges for 17 years. In that capacity, he was responsible for directing the Medical College Admission Test Program (MCAT), and for the conduct and support of medical education research at the AAMC and within its member colleges. Dr Erdmann's research interests include the problem solving process, admissions, clinical performance and program and student evaluation.

Joseph S. GonnellaJefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, USA; JOSEPH S. GONNELLA, MD is Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Dean Emeritus of Jefferson Medical College and founder and Director of the Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He has received many national and international awards and honors including the Abraham Flexner Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) in 1998, the Commendatore dell’ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana in 1978, and the Grande Ufficiale in 1995 by the President of Italy; the Dongbaeg Medal by the President of Korea; the Presidential Medal by Dartmouth College; and the Presidential Citation by Thomas Jefferson University. He has received honorary degrees from the University of Chieti, Italy; Soon Chun-Hyang University in Seoul, Korea; Widener University; the University of Minho in Portugal and the International Medical University in Malaysia. He has also received an honorary professorship from Tianjin Medical College in Tianjin, China and a Distinguished Fellowship from the International Medical University, Malaysia. Dr Gonnella has served as a guest co-editor for thematic issues of Academic Medicine (on assessments in medical school and beyond, 1993). Dr Gonnella has developed a disease staging classification which is used to assess the quality and cost of health care.
